Entrepreneur Bootcamp Fall 2011: A Recap
Wow what a great couple of days! For those of you who didn’t attend our latest Entrepreneur Bootcamp here in Redding we wanted to give you an update on how it went and share some photos from the event.
Heard from Mike about taking risks and what are the true characteristics of an entrepreneur. We got some great participant feedback and a lot of the answers were surprising, some said a true entrepreneur never gives up. But some said a savvy entrepreneur knows when to give up. Great advice!
We had Joe Wong, a local franchisee with about 40 restaurants in the Shasta area come and share his story about how he got started and his philosophy on business. Here are a few tweets from Silas Lyons, the editor at the Record Searchlight about what he took away from Joe’s talk.
We also heard from John Dues on the importance of organizing for financial success. Watched a great video from Baruch College on their guide to financial statements, a great Finance 101 for any business owner. We heard from Coleen McHugh of NorCal Pacific Insurance who gave us a great overview of the types of insurance business owners need to be thinking about and we heard from Dennis Wade on how to bootstrap your business, valuation, financing and how to reach out to investors. We also heard from representatives from the SMART center and the SBA on government resources for small business.
Day 2 was intense! A lot of information to digest and some great speakers and then time for homework. Here are some of the highlights of day 2.
First we heard from Mike Hickerson about going to market, wow. This was incredibly valuable for those of us that are getting ready to launch. Next we heard from Jenny Rae LeRoux about her story as an entrepreneur and how she went from an 11 year old selling soda on the golf course to becoming a high powered business consultant. We also heard from Todd Cassleberry about taking what he learned at the last bootcamp in April to open his business Wow Wow Waffle.
Then the fun started….well the fun for me…(this is Amber, Mike and Robbie’s daughter, by the way) I gave a talk with Bryant Jaquez on social media and SEO and why it is important to your business. We heard a lot of varying opinions from people who didn’t see the ROI based on the time it takes to use social media. And we also heard from a few converts on why they use it and how it has helped their business.
After the break we listened to Zach Perkins talk about his Melon Meter app and his experience launching his product after the first bootcamp he attended. Then it was time for Rick Sbrocca to talk on setting the culture for your business. He challenged the bootcamp attendees by asking, how will you implement a culture that drives business?
And finally we heard from Dan Morrow about the culture of innovation. Since Dan has a lot of patents under his belt, he talked a lot about protecting your ideas and inventions.
I think most of the bootcampers were very excited to have made it this far in the bootcamp, overwhelmed… maybe, but definitely ready to get working on their business plans. The homework….work on their pitch!
Today is judgement day…today we pitch to the group. This morning bootcampers were asked to describe their business in 140 characters…a business tweet if you will. The purpose of this is to get business owners to be able to quickly and easily describe what their company does when they meet investors etc.
After that it was time to work on pitching! Everyone broke up into groups of 4-5 people with an instructor or 2 and pitched their company to the group. They got feedback from everyone and were able to practice in front of a friendly audience. From the groups that pitched 3 companies were selected to give their pitch to the entire group to compete for the TOP GUN award. We had a tie between DestinyFinder.com and Dozeo.com they both had excellent pitches.
We really enjoyed meeting everyone over the 3 days of bootcamp and made some great new friends. Thank you to all our instructors, you have changed the lives of people in this group. We are so blessed to have you be part of raising up entrepreneurs in Redding! To see the rest of our photos from bootcamp please go to our Facebook albums!
